Women In Transition, founded in 1971, is one of the oldest women’s service organizations operating in the United States. Through its work with women in marital transition, WIT recognized the growing prevalence of violence in marital relationships as early as 1971. Understanding that the problems of battered women were complex and severe, WIT developed a comprehensive counseling service in 1975 to empower battered women to take control over their lives and eliminate their vulnerability to oppressive and abusive relationships. Concurrently, Women In Transition began to recognize substance abuse as a complicating factor in the lives of battered women. As a result, in 1985 Women In Transition began offering services for women with substance abuse problems. WIT has also pioneered the development of peer support groups for lesbian survivors of violence. Women In Transition (WIT) provides empowerment counseling, referrals and advocacy to women who are endangered by domestic violence and/or substance abuse. Women In Transiton also provides trainings, workshops, and community education. In addition, WIT offers Womens Anti-Violence Education (WAVE) which teaches practical, supportive, empowering safety, assertiveness and self-defense skills to women, girls and others targets for gender-based violence.
